Vandals strike

Over the weekend we have had to clear up after mindless vandals smashed nearly all the glass in our 6x8 greenhouse,a gang of youths were seen running away from the site around 5.30am after a near by resident heard breaking glass, she informed the police but to no avail,it makes you wonder what they were doing out at that time and what there parents thought there beloved offspring were up to!
To cheer me up we have also had to take off all the potato tops as they have been attacked by blight, these will be left for a couple of weeks before we dig them up and hopefully the tubers will have escaped the dreaded blight, next year I am going to grow all blight resistant potatoes as this is the third year in a row they have been affected. The carrots this year are my best yet using the Flyaway type has proved that using resistant varieties is the best organic way of growing,it will be interesting to see if they keep well and most importantly eat well.

The sun is shining

Finally the sun is shining so I have been down to the plot and put a few rows of Leeks in Neils plot ,one of our nearby plot holders had grown to many so he was giving them away, picked my first Runner Beans and dug a root of King Edwards for lunch tomorrow, a nice Fish Pie will go down well with the tender Polestar beans.
The chickens are proving to be very good at clearing slugs and bugs in the back garden but eat more green stuff than all the slugs ever could, still at least they have started to lay eggs(3).

WHAT A WET DAY

THIS MY FIRST DAY ON THIS SITE,I WAS GOING TO TELL YOU WHAT I HAVE BEEN DOING ON THE PLOT TODAY,BUT IT HAS RAINED ALL DAY AND I HAVE ONLY RUN DOWN THE GARDEN TO LET OUT OUR NEWLY ACQUIRED CHICKENS.THE PLOT IS ON THE REGATTA LANE SITE AND I SHARE IT
WITH MY SON IN LAW NEIL,I HAVE HAD VARIOUS PLOTS ON THIS SITE OVER THE LAST 35 YEARS
BUT AS WORK AND FAMILY COMMITMENTS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS SO THE PLOTS CAME AND WENT,I HAVE RETIRED NOW SO I CAN GIVE IT MY FULL ATTENTION.THIS YEARS CROPS SEEM TO BE COMING ON WELL WITH ALL THIS EXTRA WATER,SOME OF MY FELLOW PLOT HOLDERS HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THERE ONIONS MOSTLY RED ONIONS BOLTING AND SMUT ON MAIN CROP ONIONS PLUS THE USUAL PROBLEMS WITH PARSNIP SEED NOT GROWING,THE POTATOES ARE DOING WELL BUT THE THREAT OF BLIGHT IS ALWAYS PRESENT WITH ALL THIS WET WEATHER, AS I DONT SPRAY,WE ARE ALMOST ORGANIC ,I USE A FEW SLUG PELLETS AS A LAST RESORT BUT NEIL PERSISTS WITH HIS BEER TRAPS, ANYWAY I MUST LOCK CHICKENS UP NOW AS ITS DARK
ALREADY,WHAT HAPPENED TO THOSE LONG WARM SUMMER EVENINGS,PERHAPS TOMORROW WILL BE BETTER.
